WYPR interview with Jason Michael Perry, founder and Chief AI Officer of Perry Labs, and author of the new book “The AI Evolution: A Guide for Chief AI Officers and Business Leaders.” Midday guest host Farai Chideya was also joined by Dr. Anupam Joshi, incoming Chief AI Officer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

Over the past 18 months our recruiting desks have become ground zero for an historic inflection point: clients are hiring differently, candidates are applying differently, and the very definition of “team” is changing in real time. These shifts were expertly punctuated by insights from Jason Michael Perry, founder of Perry Labs and author of The AI Evolution, whose remarks on WYPR’s Midday program laid out a clear-eyed roadmap for what’s next and how rapidly these changes are occurring?

Below are the five shifts I’m watching most closely.
1. AI-Optimized Resumes vs. AI-Enabled ATS: The New Hiring Arms Race
“AI tools make it so much easier to take your résumé, take a job description, and automatically make that résumé fit all of the criteria… But on the business side, the applicant-tracking systems HR teams use are increasingly AI-enabled to help filter through thousands of résumés.”
Why it matters
-
57 % of Gen Z professionals already run their work past an AI tool before showing it to a manager. resumegenius.com
-
ATS platforms are retaliating with their own algorithms—meaning both job seekers and employers must master prompt-craft and data hygiene to stand out (or in our case, surface the right short-list faster).
Action for employers: Audit your ATS for fairness and transparency; feed it structured skills data, not just keyword-stuffed PDFs.
Action for candidates: Treat AI as a co-pilot, not a ghostwriter. Authenticity still wins interviews when humans get involved.
2. Smaller Teams, Bigger Output — The Age of the “One-Person Unicorn”
“AI agents give us the ability to do something that’s 10× the work you can do now as just a human… Sam Altman says we’re five or ten years away from having a one-person, billion-dollar company.”
Lean, AI-augmented teams are already visible in SaaS and digital media (areas where BioBuzz operates). Expect budget conversations to pivot from “headcount” to “throughput per full-time equivalent.”
3. Continuous Reskilling Becomes Non-Negotiable
“It’s not AI that’s going to take your job—it’s someone who uses AI that will.”
McKinsey predicts up to 30 % of U.S. work hours could be automated by 2030, forcing roughly 12 million occupational transitions. mckinsey.com
What we’re advising
-
Build micro-learning sprints into performance plans.
-
Reward curiosity: pilot licenses for employees to test copilots, low-code tools and vertical-specific agents.
4. AI Lowers the Barrier to Entrepreneurship
“My hope is that smaller businesses can compete in a bigger way with larger companies, doing more with smaller teams.”
From AI-driven wedding-speech generators to life-science contract-talent platforms, we’re seeing founders translate domain expertise into scalable agent workflows almost overnight. Access—not capital—is becoming the primary growth catalyst.
5. Subject-Matter Expertise Is the Ultimate Moat
“The knowledge that a mathematician—or any SME—has is incredibly important. These are tools that scale your ability, not replace it.”
In biotech hiring we already prize hybrid profiles: automation scientists who can also prompt-engineer, regulatory experts who can interrogate large-language-model outputs. The human judgment layer is where competitive advantage (and compensation) will accrue.
Final Take
Jason summed it up perfectly on air: “We’re at the AOL days of AI.” That means early adopters—whether recruiters, employers, or job seekers—still have time to shape best practices, ethical guardrails, and career trajectories before norms harden.
At Workforce Genetics we’re doubling down on AI literacy for our own team and for every client touch-point—from résumé review bots to market-mapping algorithms—so we can navigate this transformation together.
