Managing Editor

Meet Sarah Ellinwood, PhD

Baltimore, MD – Washington, DC Area
Sarah received her Ph.D. in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Maryland, but knew toward the end of her PhD that she wanted to be a science communicator. As the Managing Editor at BioBuzz, Sarah loves playing a part in helping to share the stories coming out of the region’s life science companies who are doing amazing work, all without picking up a pipette. Sarah also brings a unique understanding of the PhD workforce, and transitioning from academia into industry, which is becoming more and more important as these life science clusters continue to grow. Sarah has also played a very engaged role in Women In Bio for many years where she has held local and national roles, including Chair of Mentors, Advisors, and Peers, and also Communications.

What has made WGx/BioBuzz a good place for your career?

The team, no doubt. Everyone on our team comes from different backgrounds and brings different skill sets and expertise to the table, myself included. I really didn’t know much about the nuances of marketing and recruiting before coming on board – I very much enjoy learning from my teammates and growing my own skills in these areas! In turn, I’m able to help my team better understand complex scientific concepts, techniques, etc. We’re all learning from each other and growing together.

What do you love about your work?

Ask me about my tchotchkes on my desk and on my shelves, which includes but is not limited to:

  • My rotating desk plants
  • A fuzzy llama doll
  • A stuffed Mycobacterium tuberculosis plush
  • A Banjo-Kazooie Super Smash Brothers amiibo
  • A Betty White prayer candle (RIP…)
  • A photo of my 2-year old
  • Numerous Bath & Body Works lotions
  • Handmade stained glass pieces

All these little trinkets speak a lot about my life – from my PhD work in tuberculosis to my video game nerdiness to my stained glass hobby to my hoarding of nicely-scented lotions. 😊
